What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the single indirect tax charged on the supply of most goods and services in India. It replaced older taxes such as VAT, service tax and excise duty in July 2017. As a buyer you pay GST as part of the price; as a registered business you collect it from customers, claim credit for the GST you paid on purchases, and deposit the difference with the government.
Because GST appears on almost every bill — from a restaurant receipt to a freelancer’s invoice — it is useful to be able to add it to a price or pull it out of a total quickly and correctly. That is exactly what this calculator does.
How to Use the GST Calculator
- Enter the amount. Type the price you have, for example ₹1,000.
- Pick the GST slab. Choose the rate that applies to your product or service (see the table below).
- Choose the calculation type.
- Exclusive (Add GST) — when your amount is before tax and you want the final price.
- Inclusive (Remove GST) — when your amount already includes tax and you want to know the base price and the tax inside it.
- Read the summary. You get the net price, total GST, the CGST/SGST split and the final amount. Use Copy to paste the breakup into an invoice or message.
GST Formulas
Adding GST (exclusive amount)
Example: A service costs ₹1,000 and attracts 18% GST. GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180. The customer pays ₹1,180. Within the same state this is shown as ₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST.
Removing GST (inclusive amount)
Example: You paid ₹1,000 for an item that includes 18% GST. Base price = 1,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹847.46, so the GST inside the bill is ₹152.54.
GST Rate Slabs in India (after GST 2.0)
From 22 September 2025, the GST Council simplified the structure. The old 12% and 28% slabs were folded into the two main rates, and a separate higher rate was created for a small group of goods. Broadly:
| Rate | Typical items |
|---|---|
| 0% (exempt) | Fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, curd, bread, most educational services, individual health and life insurance |
| 3% | Gold, silver and jewellery |
| 5% | Packaged food staples, soaps and toothpaste, medicines, many textiles and footwear, small hotels and non-AC restaurants |
| 18% | Most services (telecom, banking fees, IT, professional services), electronics, small cars, cement, ACs and TVs |
| 40% | Luxury and sin goods such as larger cars, high-end motorcycles, aerated and sugary drinks, pan masala |
Rates are set item by item using HSN (goods) and SAC (services) codes, so always confirm the exact rate for your product on the official GST portal or with your accountant. The calculator also keeps the older 12% and 28% options so you can check invoices raised before the change.
CGST, SGST and IGST Explained
- Intra-state sale (seller and buyer in the same state): GST is split equally — 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
- Inter-state sale (different states): the whole 18% is charged as IGST.
- Union Territories without a legislature use UTGST in place of SGST.
The total tax paid by the customer is identical in every case; only the way it is shared between the Centre and the state changes. The calculator shows the CGST/SGST split because it is the most common case for local billing.
